'Handloom' clusters are famous and occupied a very significant place in the Bengal handloom industry. Two sub-divisions, Katwa & Kalna mainly depend on the handloom industry in Purba Bardhaman district. Considerable handlooms artisans are still working in this cluster on a full and part-time basis. The handloom is very much popular for its “Tangail saree”, and “Jamdani saree”. The handloom finished products of Katwa I&II block are of coarser varieties of cloths. Where the weaving community of those blocks is producing finer counts of cloth mainly sarees of famous Jamdani, Tangail varieties with attractive designs, which are highly appreciated in Bengal handlooms as well as the other States of India. Recently the weavers of Shyambati, Tamaghata, and Vidyanagar under the Purba Burdwan cluster also produced home furnishing, scarves, Nylon shirtings etc. for the export market.
