The beautiful stone images unearthed in different parts of the State, especially those of the Pal period, speak highly of the degree of attainment of the Bengal craftsman. Stone was largely used in temples and palaces and the artisans devoted their talents to craving exquisite images of Gods and Goddesses on them. The villages Dainhat and Patuli in the Katwa sub-division achieved a distinction for making stone images in the 16th / 17th Century. The traditional craftsman, living in these villages, had supplied many beautiful images, which are still being worshipped in temples and houses in different places, A few descendants of the old masters are still engaged in the craft. Stone carving as an off-shoot of the main sculpture reflects the same perfection of skill found in the temples.
